A loud refrigerator is very annoying. If the refrigerator in your home seems to be a bit noisier than it usually is there are a couple of simple place that you can look at while trying to find a solution. There are many fans on a home refrigerator that often create strange noises. The appliance could also not be balanced too. Or you may have a compressor that is wearing out. If your refrigerator is louder when the ice maker is operating, the noises might be a broken a water valve.

There are a couple of basic things that must be be checked. Like is your refrigerator too full? A refrigerator that’s too can sometimes cause glass bottles and other items to clink together. This will cause a lot of loud sounds inside of the refrigerator that isn’t ideal because the refrigerator is cooling and thereby producing a minor vibration.

If you own a model of refrigerator that has a water dispenser or ice maker but you do not have the water connected, be sure you shut off the dispenser and ice maker. There’s almost always a button on the water dispenser on the refrigerator that can be pressed to shut off the water dispenser. And as far as the ice maker, you need to lift the bar. If the refrigerator is installed near a wall, it will sometimes cause the standard running noise to seem much louder. This is a result of the echo of the noise of the appliance. Pull the refrigerator out a little from the wall and see if that helps or not. A refrigerator should be close to 2 inches from the rear wall to reduce the sound.

If it’s not any of these simple and easier fixes, it’s time to explore the issue further. Most of the time, the fans are the reason for a refrigerator that’s loud. There are fan blades that can get dirty and clogged. Often times the fan motors do as well. There is a condenser fan in the refrigerator and an evaporator on the refrigerator too. Many times the refrigerator condenser fan will get a coating of dust or fuzz on it and then needs to be cleaned often. If it builds up and gets too heavy it might wear out the bearings inside of the refrigerator fan’s motor.

Clean the Fan & Refrigerator Condenser Coils

The first thing to do is unplug the refrigerator. The condenser fan is typically located in the rear of the refrigerator. A lot of the time you will need a wrench or screwdriver to get the back panel off from the refrigerator. Once exposed you’ll notice a fan inside. If it’s covered in dust and dirt, get a cloth and gently wipe it off. While you’re in there look at the coils too. The coils are usually near there and full of the same dust and grime that the fan is. Cleaning the coils will only take a couple of minutes and it will certainly help the refrigerator run more efficiently. This is a very common problem that can cause a refrigerator to run non-stop.

Spin the fan blades in the refrigerator. Do they spin easily? If they don’t the fan motor bearings are not working. This is an easy repair, as the fan assembly is usually a component that can be ordered and can be replaced by just disconnecting it. However, before trying this, be sure the refrigerator is not plugged in. Do this same process for the evaporator fan in the refrigerator, which is located behind the freezer unit. This is not typically the issue, as this particular fan is protected inside the walls of the refrigerator. But, if the sounds are coming from the top of the refrigerator that is the place to check.

If you think it might be the refrigerator compressor, the big, usually black or gray object under the refrigerator by the coils, we suggest calling C&B Chino Hills Appliance Repair. That isn’t a repair a homeowner should proceed with.
